The Institute of Education Science (IES) Pre-Doctoral Training Program in the Education Sciences is an ambitious, multi-year, university-wide fellowship program, sponsored by the Committee on Education, which supports PhD students interested in pursuing research related to education while they are training for a doctoral degree in a social science discipline or within the Harris School of Public Policy or the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice.

Fellows in this program receive a five-year package of support that includes a full tuition waiver and a generous stipend of $34,000 annually and fringe benefits. Additional funds are available to support travel and research related to education research. 

To be considered, you must be currently applying to a PhD program in a participating department or professional school. Participating departments or schools are:Comparative Human DevelopmentEconomics, Political Science, PsychologySociology, the Harris School of Public Policy, and the School of Social Service Administration.

Applying for this fellowship does not guarantee admission to a PhD program at the University of Chicago, nor does admission to a participating PhD program guarantee the award of an IES Fellowship.

  2. Essay: Provide a brief statement (1-2 pages) describing how your proposed research will contribute to understanding how to improve education and reduce educational inequality.
  3. Writing Sample


Deadline: The review process for this Fellowship begins on December 1, 2021, and ends April 15, 2022.To receive full consideration for the IES Fellowship, we strongly encourage prospective students to submit their IES application by December 1.
